MLK JR. HOLIDAY PARADE
Doing What’s Needed
Thanks to you and the thousands of patrons who lined the streets to watch, last year’s King Holiday Parade was a success.
We are most appreciative to previously registered participants for your support for past parades. This is our special invitation to you to be an important part of this year’s parade as well. Your participation is needed in order to equal or surpass last year’s event.
As your King Holiday Parade planners for over 40 years, we have worked diligently to make this event inclusive of all races, creeds and religions. The number of parade participants and on-lookers suggests that we have been successful.

OPENING CEREMONY AND SILENT MARCH
Tackling the Issue
The silent march is held in the style of the early civil rights movement marches, beginning about 9 AM on the morning of the King Holiday. It proceeds from the Freedom Center west on NW 23rd to the Oklahoma History Center just east of the state capitol building. At that location, it is followed at 11:00 AM by the Bell Ringing.

CROSS-CULTURAL PROGRAM
Making a Difference
The Oklahoma City Martin Luther King Jr. Holiday Coalition is proud to co-sponsor this important interfaith community event along with many other organizations.

HOLIDAY PROGRAM
Making a Difference
In 1983, the United States Congress passed, and then President Reagan signed, a bill to create an federal holiday to honor the life, memory, and influence of civil rights icon Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. Now, to remember and honor King’s ideals, sacrifice and contributions to our nation, we come together to pray, to sing, to celebrate, but also to re-pledge our own commitment to nonviolence, peace and the pursuit of justice.
This Holiday Program offers a fitting place to make that commitment publicly and in communion with a diverse community of like-minded people. The event is free and open to all.
The event features an invocation, speeches from community leaders, music and a benediction. The parade immediately follows, starting from a nearby location.
When available, the program for the event will be made available on this page.

STUDENT ESSAY AND POSTER CONTEST
Doing What’s Needed
The Martin Luther King Jr. Holiday Coalition of Oklahoma City established an Essay and Poster Contest in 2016 for elementary, middle, and high school students with prizes that will be awarded in conjunction with the Martin Luther King, Jr. Holiday in January. The theme for 2020’s event is “A Forty Years- Better Together.”
